From Garnet :

This year, my 1956 is 56 years old. How sweet is that?

I found my 1956 GMC pickup in a Quonset-hut style farm building (machine shop) where she had been sitting for more than seven years. Except for the engine, this old truck is all original all the way down to the wood in the bed.

When I found the truck, I asked the farmer whether he'd be interested in selling and if so, how much would he want. Jim replied that the price was $4500. I immediately said, "Sold!" His response to meĀ  was, "Well ok. You own it."

The farmer then explained that many people had tried to purchase the truck, but had always tried to negotiate a lower price. Evidently, he had already determined what he believed it was worth and just held firm.

Jim had purchased the truck at an auction in Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan. He drove it home and parked it in the Quonset hut. He was keeping it for when his International pick up truck wore out. As of this day, he's still driving the International!

I was blown away by the deal and on top of that, he even let me make payments. Sometimes no price haggles pay off.

Once I got her home, I cleaned the fuel tank and spark plugs, shot some diesel fuel in the cylinders and installed a new battery. She then started right up.

The body had no rust and I had her painted, but decided to leave the original wood bed. I have since discovered that she is the 6000th 9300 series truck manufactured by GMC for the 1956 model year.

Although it runs ok now, sometime in the future I would like to rebuild the engine and add a radio. My plan for this year is to have the engine and tranny re-done and finish under the hood.

Thanks,

Garnet Ulmer
